CEST is Austria’s competence centre for electrochemical surface technology and functions as an innovation generator and trendsetter at the interface between science and industry. CEST was founded in 2008 within the framework of the Austrian competence centre programme COMET as a K1 centre.

CEST Kompetenzzentrum für elektrochemische Oberflächentechnologie GmbH, together with its partners from the scientific community and industry, exists to serve producing companies.
The goal of all K1 partners is to bundle the realised developments for innovative business processes and products. Within the funding period of the Comet K1 programme, CEST aims to establish itself as a leading European institute for electrochemical surface technology.
The research projects of CEST are carried out in close cooperation with domestic and foreign universities – in particular to ensure a high level of scientific quality and to take advantage of the know-how of the university institutions. Institutes of the following universities play key roles:
In addition, graduate thesis projects and dissertations are regularly awarded and supported. This ensures that university graduates with experience in electrochemical surface technologies are available to industry.
In the second half of 2012, CEST succeeded in optimising all administrative requirements for the internal control system in order to successfully attain ISO 9001 certification for surface analysis at CEST by TÜV Süd in the first quarter of 2014. This is another important developmental step for CEST in order to further expand its (non-)COMET business and contract research!
