Development of new types of functionalised materials (carbon-based semi-conductor technology and innovative boron complexes) for the detection of pharmaceutical and environmentally relevant substances, such as mycotoxins, ligands, bacteria, cytostatic drugs, antibiotics and/or air pollutants. Production, optimisation and characterisation of graphene-based field effect transistors for the sensitive and specific detection of a wide range of analytes. Adaptation and further development of electrochemical and material science characterisation methods. Evaluation, continuation and application of current achievements in the area of biosensors, bioelectronics and biomimetics.
This area provides an arsenal of methods necessary for the successful investigation of problems facing industry. Close cooperation with industry partners makes possible the focused optimisation of measurement methods and new systems for meeting the requirements of the current state of science and engineering. Through this cooperation and the resulting close link to the application, new technologies are consistently driven to the limit of current possibilities and even beyond.
In the rapidly growing field of bioelectrochemistry, the research work of CEST focuses on the development of synthetic electrochemical, biomimetic sensor platforms for the analysis of diverse target molecules of relevance to biomedicine and the environment. The further development of biosensors will result in lower detection limits for hard-to-detect “small” molecules, specific analysis of problematic environmental samples, passivation of surfaces to protect against corrosion (anti-fouling), and much more.
In its projects, CEST works with experts from the Austrian Institute of Technology (AIT), the Vienna University of Technology (TU Wien) and the University of Vienna.
