Project abstract:

Within this project, we are working on the development of a simple, painless, non-invasive point-of-care breath sensing device for breast cancer diagnosis. The metabolome of breast cancer patients bears several biomarkers, whereas five are chosen as main targets within the project. We intend to detect those molecules by implementing molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) as recognition elements onto QCM electrodes and develop conductive MIPs to implement them in chemiresistor sensing systems.

Both types of sensors will be optimized, which should finally lead to an excellent simple, cheap, portable and non-invasive point-of-care device for the prediction of breast cancer in alveolar breath.

A successful development of our proposed sensors could pave the way to an improved early detection and monitoring system, which is applicable at home, would directly improve the early detection system and decrease the workload within the health system.
